Public Access/Input to School Board Meetings

posted Mar 30, 2020, 1:23 PM by Kelly Johnston   [ updated Mar 31, 2020, 11:43 AM by School Webmaster ]

There are a few options for members of the community to stay connected with School Board meetings.  Meetings can be viewed on two different platforms - either through YouTube or through Zoom In either mode, you will also be able to ask questions or participate in the Public Comment section of a School Board meeting.

If a member of the public would like to make a public comment while in Zoom, please include your name and address, and then type your comment in the “Q&A” section of the Zoom meeting, and a designated member will read your comment out loud for the record. Alternatively, members of the public can ask to be recognized in the Q&A section and they can make a video statement.  As a third option, if members of the public cannot join the Zoom meeting, they can email their public statements to publiccomment@scarboroughschools.org and the statement will be read aloud during the comments period.

Thank you all for your patience as we continue to keep you informed during these very challenging times!

SPS CLOSED THRU MARCH 27, 2020

posted Mar 15, 2020, 2:05 PM by Kelly Johnston   [ updated Mar 15, 2020, 2:07 PM ]

We are reconnecting with you today to communicate next steps as we work through the current impact of COVID-19 and our commitment to “flatten the curve” and promote social distancing.  School and district leaders have been meeting throughout the weekend. Here are the critical updates
at this time:
  • Scarborough Public Schools will be closed for 2 weeks, through March 27.  We continue to reassess our timelines for school closure on an ongoing basis, utilizing the most current CDC and Department of Education guidance.  We will reassess our decision to re-open as we approach the two-week timeline.

  • School buildings will be open Monday, March 16, from noon to 6 pm and Tuesday, March 17, from 7 am to noon, for anyone in need of their chromebook or laptop (grades 6-12), medications, or other critical personal belongings.  Beginning on Wednesday, March 18, buildings will be closed.

  • Families currently participating in the School Nutrition Backpack Program will continue to be served.  If you are experiencing new concerns around food security, please contact us at food@scarboroughschools.org or leave a message at 730-4700 to access support.

  • We are in the process of setting up a centralized webpage for all things COVID-19, including our communications as well as optional learning ideas, resources and activities at www.scarboroughschools.org/covid19.  This link should be live by Tuesday, March 17. The resources will be there for when you and your children are ready to access them. Our intention is to provide opportunities to stay connected as a learning community.

Most importantly, please take care of yourselves and your families as we navigate these challenging times.  Feel free to reach out to school leaders with questions; we will be in touch as new information becomes available.

SPS CLOSED WEEK OF MARCH 16TH

posted Mar 14, 2020, 10:34 AM by Kelly Johnston   [ updated Mar 14, 2020, 10:35 AM ]

Given the growing concern about the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus across the state of Maine and throughout our nation, we have determined that the best course of action is to close our schools now.

We have come to the realization that closing our schools now and taking this time to “flatten the curve” would be the best course of action to ensure the ongoing safety of all of our students and staff.  Please know that this decision does not come lightly, and we completely understand that cancelling school may present many challenges for you.

On Friday, March 20, we will reassess and make decisions about ongoing closures or the ability to reopen, and we will communicate that information to you.  At this time, the decision to close schools is a local decision based on what we are feeling is in the best interest of our community. An update on how we plan to support the continuation of learning will be shared via a separate communication to you on Monday, March 16.

Thank you for your understanding during this extremely challenging time.
