2017: A Great Year of Giving!

The Scarborough Education Foundation is thankful for the generosity of its supporters and is pleased to announce our Fall 2017 grant recipients. Over $22,500 in grants were awarded to 8 educators during this round!!! In total, SEF awarded over $41,000 in grants to 14 recipients in 2017! 

SEF's 2017 Fall Grant Awards

This semester's 8 grants will fund the following innovative programs in the Scarborough Public Schools:
Polar Heart Rate Monitors - Students at the high school will self-monitor their heart rates during physical education class in order to identify strengths and opportunities to improve their personal fitness levels.
Model UN Guest Speaker - Nationally recognized gender educator, Cindy Pierce, will speak at Scarborough High School to foster an educational dialog between students and teachers about building healthy relationships between genders. 
Live Shakespeare - Portland Theater will perform a live performance of Julius Caesar and provide cast and staff workshops with all 11th grade students who attend.
Introduction to Genomics & Bioethics - Funding will help develop and implement an introductory genomics and bioethics course at Scarborough High School - one of the only courses of its kind in the State!
Expanding Instrumentation & Sound - A new sound system for the middle school band will allow them to play recordings for instructional purposes and amplify instruments during performances to enhance the band's sound.
Creative and Collaborative Community Building - Funding will help to purchase teambuilding games and activities to use during advisory time at the high school - helping to forge meaningful relationships between staff and students.
School Store at Wentworth - Students in the math support program will create a school store at Wentworth as a way to apply the mathematical concepts they are learning about. The grant will help set up the store and purchase initial inventory.
Costumes for American Revolutionary War Plays - Performance costumes will be used to enhance the educational experience of the 4th grade American Revolutionary War plays that are performed each spring.
