Scarborough Board of Education November 2024 Update

The School Board is working to provide brief updates for the whole community and hope to update on a monthly basis. In November, the Board met on 11/7 and 11/21. This is a brief overview and some links for more information below. 

On 11/21, There was a Joint Workshop with the Town Council, the first Phase 2 School Building Advisory Committee (SBAC) update. See the meeting link below if you wish to watch the workshop or board meetings. There was an update on leadership elections and the unanimous selection of a consultant for the second phase of the SBAC. 

During the 11/21 regularly scheduled Board Meeting, there was a celebration of Fall Sports with a presentation by the Athletic Department including coaches and students. High School Principal Nate Theriault provided an excellent overview of the program of studies.

The next regularly scheduled workshop will be December 19th: “Understanding AI”, presented by the district’s IT Director, Jenn Day along with the district’s Curriculum Director, Katie Vetro. 

On December 5th, the board will hear from the Director of Nutrition Services, Peter Esposito, for a review of the Nutrition Services within the district. 

On 11/7 the Board committee chairs provided updates, summarized below. For a more detailed overview of the committee reports, you can see the summary by clicking here.

  • Finance Committee on Q1 Financials;
  • Policy Committee regarding multiple policies were put forward to first reading, largely related to Title IX changes that happened on a federal level and starting work on a Device Policy;
  • DEI Committee The board has been considering the next phase of the DEI committee and how that work will continue within the district. The committee members wrote a joint letter to the board which was read during the meeting, linked here.
  • Negotiations Committee provided a brief update on progress with contracts.
  • Communications Committee provided an overview of the committee's goals and plans moving forward. On 11/21, the committee presented a Spotlight Award to Nikki Vafiades! Congratulations Ms. Vafiades!
  • School Building Advisory Committee update was given regarding leadership committee selection and an update on the selection of a consultant. The 11/21 Joint Council-Board meeting can be found below. The consultant chosen was Harriman.
  • Student Reports were also given by Senior Student Rep Grace Leger and Junior Rep Abigail Rasquinha.
